Cold and flu season got you down? We have a “bug” circulating in our house at the moment. It consists of congestion, cough, scratchy throat, and general fatigue. Basically, a COLD! Guess we need a vegan immunity boost!
Colds are annoying.
They are inconvenient.
I don’t want to catch a cold. Ew.
An Ounce of Prevention
So….in addition to my Vegan Immunity Boost recipe, here are our practices for strengthening our defenses against the yucky germs!
-Go to bed EARLY. Yes, that’s right. Don’t think that, because you are on the couch in front of the TV, that you are “resting.” Proper rest means – go to bed and go to sleep. By going to bed early you are giving your body a longer chance to heal or to prevent getting sick.
Hydrate
-Drink water. Hot or cool, but get those fluids inside. Add a squeeze of lemon or lime juice if you like. Keep doing this throughout the day. Place a glass of water by your bed at night in case you wake up parched at any point.
-Consume other fluids. Tea, soup, broth, juice, or smoothies are all good choices. We drink a lot of echinacea and turmeric teas, when possible. Be sure to discontinue the echinacea after a few days or a week. It is reported to lose its potency if you take it non-stop.
More Immune-system help
-Rest during the day. If you can, nap. If you can’t, just take a break, preferably with your feet up.
-Eat peppery, spicy foods if you can stand them. These often have the effect of clearing out your sinus passages. Some people find they soothe a sore throat, while others find them to be more irritating. You have a choice in the matter, so do what works best for yourself.
Breathe Steam
-Boil water and pour into a large bowl. Add some eucalyptus, rosemary, or wild marjoram oil. Place a large towel over your head and breathe in the steam.
-Apply heat to your throat if it is sore. Use a hot water bottle, heating pad, or slather on sunscreen and go outside in the fresh air if it is warm enough outside.
Keep it Clean
-Sanitize things like your light switches, faucet handles, and remote controls. A little rubbing alcohol on a cloth goes a long way.
-Launder towels frequently.
-Wash pillowcases more frequently than your sheets.
-Encourage everyone in the household to wash their hands often, for at least 20 seconds. Teach them to cover their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Show them how to cough into their inner elbow rather than their hand.
Allow Yourself Some Slack
-Give yourself a break. If you are feeling too lousy to do housework, let someone else take up the slack. Now is not the time to worry how perfectly your towels are folded.
-Don’t worry about working out, either! If you really feel the need to do something, when you are able, how about some light, relaxing yoga or stretching exercises?
-Eat onions, garlic, and ginger.
Home Remedy
You will need a clove of garlic. I also use agave nectar. This is optional, but something syrupy will work as well and make it easier to go down. Try maple syrup or brown rice syrup in the interests of keeping it vegan.
Next you’ll need some fresh ginger.
Following that is some lemon or lime juice.
Here is my recipe for a home remedy that we have found to offer a vegan immunity boost.

That’s part of the point. With extreme garlic breath, the vampire germs will be less inclined to get close to you.
My grandpa swore by onions when everyone around him was getting sick. In fact, he claimed that it’s the reason he wasn’t afflicted by the pandemic of 1918. He just kept eating onions.
My father said people just stayed away from him because he stunk so badly.
Odor or no odor, the onions, just like garlic, contain immune-boosting nutrients as well as anti-oxidants.
The stench is just a bonus prize. 😉
Other Ingredients
Ginger also contains anti-oxidants and supports digestion.
Lemon juice contains Vitamin C and adds a more pleasant flavor.
Agave is added merely for taste, and is completely optional.
How do you give yourself an immunity boost?
Blessings!
